Headlines, Newsletters, & Mail Lists

May 29th, 2008 · No Comments

Last month I signed up to use an email service for Wind Over Wings, which has a  mail list of roughly 700 subscribers.  I had a mail blast that I needed to get out in about an hour.  I was traveling and in the Cleveland airport.

I decided to go with iContact out of North Carolina.  It turned out to be a good decision. I was able to set up an account, upload the mail list, and send the newsletter, all from the gate at the airport.  The service I choose costs about $15 per month and lets you have 1000 contacts and up to 6,000 messages per month.  So they’re cost effective and offer most of the services you would expect like tracking, templates, and storage.

So I received iContacts monthly newsletter today.  Interestingly, one of the points their marketing person makes is that most people really skim headlines to decide which story to read or click on, rather than reading the entire newsletter.  This is true even if it’s just a couple of paragraph email.   Headlines are key.

This is one of the reasons that I use and sell Glyphius, Headline Scoring Software.  You can BUY IT HERE or view a Brief Glyphius Demo here.  For the Newsletters and mailings that I send out for Wind Over Wings, my click through rate runs 2-3 times the industry averages.  That’s important for any business, and it’s critical when doing it for a not for profit.
